Late on Sunday (June 30), the West Bengal Police arrested a local TMC leader identified as Tajemul, also known as JCB, on charges of brutally assaulting a couple allegedly involved in an illicit relationship.

The West Bengal Police announced the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the accused was promptly identified and arrested for publicly assaulting a woman. "Suo Moto case started by the police. The victim has been provided with police security. Investigation proceeds," the tweet mentioned.

Significantly, the case against Tajemul, from Chopra in the Uttar Dinajpur district, was registered after a video clip of him brutally assaulting a woman and a man believed to be involved in a relationship went viral on social media.

Amit Malviya, BJP West Bengal co-in-charge, who first took note of the incident, shared details of the horrific act. "This is the ugly face of Mamata Banerjee's rule in West Bengal. The guy in the video, who is beating up a woman mercilessly, is Tajemul (popular as JCB in the area). He is famous for giving quick justice through his ‘insaf’ sabha and is a close associate of Chopra MLA Hamidur Rahaman. India must wake up to the reality of Sharia Courts in TMC-run West Bengal. There is a Sandeshkhali in every village and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is a curse for women," Malviya said.

"There is no semblance of law and order in Bengal. Will Mamata Banerjee act against this monster or defend him like she stood up for Sheikh Shahjahan?" the BJP leader further added.

Meanwhile, in the aftermath of the incident, Union Health Minister and BJP leader J P Nadda also criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the deteriorating state of women's safety in the state. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he said, "A horrific video has come to light from West Bengal, reminding of the brutalities that exist only in theocracies. To make matters worse, the TMC cadre and MLAs are justifying the act."

"Be it Sandeshkhali, Uttar Dinajpur or many other places, Didi's West Bengal is unsafe for women," he added.

TMC leader denies his involvement

Local TMC MLA Hamidur Rahman, believed to have connection with the accused distanced himself from the incident. He said it was a village matter and not related to the party.

TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal attributed the incident to the couple's alleged illicit relationship, which "did not go down well with the villagers".

He said that the party would investigate the episode.
