West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Sunday voiced his concerns over reports of post-poll violence in Sandeshkhali and called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene immediately to restore peace.
Speaking to media, the Governor revealed that he has written to Banerjee, requesting information about the actions taken against those involved in the incidents in Sandeshkhali, located in North 24 Parganas district.
"I am a bit worried about the situation in Sandeshkhali. From the inputs I have received, I have come to know about incidents of attacks on the women of Sandeshkhali within hours after the polling was over yesterday. I have written to the Chief Minister about the steps taken in this regard," Bose stated.
Further, the Governor also added that he wants to know when the violence would cease and when the residents of Sandeshkhali would be able to live a “fearless life” like other citizens of India.
"This (alleged torture of Sandeshkhali people) cannot go on. It must stop. It is the responsibility of the CM to intervene and take immediate steps. After all, she is the police minister of the state as well," Bose added.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Governor during his visit to the region had earlier assured the women of Sandeshkhali of their safety and security. Hence, reiterating his commitment, he stated that he would provide shelter for the "tortured" people at Raj Bhavan if the violence continued.
"If such attacks continue and the inhabitants are tortured, I will open the doors of the Raj Bhavan for them to come and stay. They will be provided safe shelter here," he asserted.
Moreover, it is pertinent to note that in less than 24 hours after the election concluded, Sandeshkhali witnessed another round of clashes. On Sunday, skirmishes broke out between women and police when the latter detained a person in connection with previous attacks on police personnel.
Women in Agarhati village in Sandeshkhali clashed with Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, blocked roads, and felled tree trunks when the police sought individuals allegedly involved in the previous night's attacks, a senior police officer reported.
