In the latest series of heated exchanges between West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Raj Bhavan on Saturday ordered the state government to present a white paper on the state's financial situation.

In a statement, the West Bengal Governor called upon CM Mamata Banerjee to issue a white paper to inform the people of the state amid claims that West Bengal is facing a financial breakdown.

"The fiscal situation of West Bengal is confronting multiple fiscal risks and public finance management issues, exposing serious lapses on the part of the state government. It is very disturbing, shocking, and shattering to see that West Bengal is facing a financial breakdown. Its public finance is in the doldrums," the statement from Raj Bhavan mentioned.

"Considering the grave nature of the economic scenario, the Governor calls upon the CM, under the authority vested in him under Article 167 of the Constitution read with Rule 30 of the Rules of Business for West Bengal framed under Article 166 of the Constitution, to place a comprehensive report on the state's financial situation before the council of ministers and issue a white paper for the information of the people of the state," the statement added.

West Bengal Governor files defamation suit against CM Mamata

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that this statement from Raj Bhavan comes a day after Governor C V Ananda Bose, on Friday (June 28), filed a defamation case against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Calcutta High Court. The suit follows Banerjee's claim that women complained to her, saying they were afraid to visit the Raj Bhavan because of activities reported there.

Mamata Banerjee, has claimed that, "Women have informed her they are afraid to visit Raj Bhavan due to recent incidents reported there." She was addressing an administrative meeting in the state secretariat when she made the comments.

Further, in response to "erroneous and slanderous impressions", "Governor C V Ananda Bose on Friday moved the Calcutta High Court and filed a defamation suit against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party leaders for their comments," sources quoted by PTI said.

Bose had also named certain TMC leaders in the defamation suit for making similar remarks, the sources added.
