West Bengal Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: The counting of votes for the 42 seats in West Bengal is now underway. The voting was held in all seven phases, starting from April 19. The fight was dominated by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the addition of the Congress and the Left Front. It remains to be seen whether the BJP will further capitalise on its impressive performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, 30 seats are contested as unreserved, while 10 seats are reserved for SC candidates and two seats are reserved for ST candidates. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the TMC won 22 seats, while the BJP sprung a major surprise, winning 18 seats. The Congress won the remaining two seats. The BJP dramatically increased their seats from only two in 2014 to 18 in 2019. Will the BJP be able to break through in TMC strongholds once again?
Key candidates and seats in West Bengal
Out of the 42 seats in West Bengal, all eyes would be on the competition in Cooch Behar, Darjeeling, Balurghat, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Murshidabad, Kolkata North, Asansol, Baharampur, Tamluk, Hooghly, Medinipur and Krishnanagar. A fierce fight is expected in the north Bengal region, which is influenced by regional identity and Gorkhaland issues. Other constituencies will also see high-stakes contests with communal tensions, labour issues and development.
Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of CM Mamata Banerjee, seeks to prevail in the contest in Diamond Harbour during the seventh phase on June 1. Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha last year in a cash-for-query scandal, has been fielded from the Krishnanagar seat by the TMC. Five-time Congress MP from Baharampur Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury will face off against TMC's surprise pick, former cricketer Yusuf Pathan. Raju Singh Bista and Dilip Ghosh, who won in 2019, face uphill battles in Darjeeling and Bardhaman-Durgapur respectively, while Sukanta Majumdar and Nisith Pramanik seem to retain their seats in Balurghat and Cooch Behar. Arjun Singh, who re-joined BJP earlier this year, will contest in Barrackpore again. Moreover, former Calcutta HC Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay seeks to break the TMC fortress in Tamluk.
