Blast incident in Kolkata leaves one injured, investigation underway

A rag picker was injured in a blast at the intersection of Blochmann Street and S.N. Banerjee Road in central Kolkata. Police have cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation.

A ragpicker was injured in a blast at the crossing of Blochmann Street and S.N. Banerjee Road in central Kolkata on Saturday afternoon. The police said the incident occurred around 1:45 PM, and further investigation into the case is ongoing.

Kolkata Police releases a statement over the incident

Significantly, the Kolkata Police, in a statement released, elaborated on the incident. They mentioned that Taltala Police Station first reached the spot and immediately began their investigation into the blast report that occurred at the crossing of Blochmann Street and S.N. Banerjee Road around 1:45 pm on Saturday.

"Accordingly, the officer-in-charge of Taltala arrived at the scene and learned that the ragpicker identified as Bapi Das injured in the incident had been taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, a plastic gunny bag was found at the entry point of Blochmann Street," the police in a statement said.

"The area was immediately cordoned off with security tape, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called," they added.

Traffic resumed after BDDS clearance.

Further, it is pertinent to note that it was only after the BDDS personnel reached the scene and inspected the bag and the surrounding area that the traffic was allowed to resume.
