Asansol Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Veteran Bollywood actor and TMC's candidate Shatrughan Sinha defeated BJP's SS Ahluwalia in his hometown by more than 59,000 votes. CPM candidate Jahanara Khan came at a distant third in Asansol.

Asansol Lok Sabha Election Results 2024:  Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate and veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha trounced Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) SS Ahluwalia with a margin of 59,564 votes. Sinha got 6,05,645 votes (46.53 per cent) while Ahluwalia secured 5,46,081 (41.96 per cent). Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) candidate Jahanara Khan came at a distant third,

Asansol is one of the high-profile seats out of the total 42 constituencies. It is a GENERAL category seat located in the Eastern region of the state, bordering Jharkhand, and is famous for its coal mines and factories. Asansol has seven Assembly constituencies - Pandabeswar, Raniganj, Jamuria, Asansol Dakshin, Asansol Uttar, Kulti and Barbani - all in Paschim Bardhaman district. 

 

Asansol Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Key candidates and parties

The Asansol Lok Sabha constituency has been dominated by the Left and the Congress till 2014, when then-BJP leader and singer Babul Supriyo won the Lok Sabha elections for two consecutive times. The BJP, TMC and the CPM will lock horns to secure a victory in the industrial belt of West Bengal. The TMC has fielded Bollywood superstar Shatrughan Sinha, who won the 2022 by-polls for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency after Supriyo vacated the seat and switched to the TMC. Sinha has served as a Lok Sabha MP from Patna Sahib constituency as well as a Rajya Sabha member. 

He was also a Union Cabinet Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Shipping in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He defeated BJP's Agnimitra Paul in the 2022 by-polls by a margin of over three lakh votes after the seat was left vacant. His BJP opponent is Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia, who was born in Asansol, represents the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency and won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat in 2014. Ahluwalia has been fielded from his home district after Bhojpuri Star Pawan Singh declined to contest from this seat. Entering the fray is Left candidate Jahanara Khan, a debutant in the Lok Sabha elections.

The constituency went to Lok Sabha polls in the fourth phase of the general elections on May 13.

West Bengal saw a voter turnout of 80.22 per cent in the fourth phase. Out of the eight constituencies in that phase, Asansol witnessed a voter turnout of  73.27 per cent, according to the Election Commission of India.

Asansol Lok Sabha Elections 2024: What happened in 2019 and 2014?

In the 2019 General Assembly Elections, Asansol witnessed a 76.62 per cent voter turnout in the year 2019. BJP candidate Babul Supriya Baral won the 2019 General Election with a victory margin of 1,97,637 votes, securing 6,33,378 votes. Babul Supriya Baral defeated Sreemati (Moon Moon) and Dev Varma (Sen) of the TMC, who got 4,35,741 votes.

In the 2014 Assembly elections, Supriyo emerged victorious by defeating TMC's Dola Sen by a margin of 70,480 votes. Supriyo garnered 419,983 votes (36.76 per cent) while Dola Sean got 349,503 votes (30.59 per cent). Supriyo's victory in Asansol broke CPM's winning streak since 1980.
