In response to the prolonged unrest in Sandeshkhali, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has established a temporary camp office in Dhamakhali. This initiative follows more than five months of tension in West Bengal and aims to facilitate complaint lodging and expedite investigations. The camp will operate around the clock for the next month.
Alternative to email complaints
Initially, the CBI provided an email address for residents to submit their complaints, as per the orders of the Calcutta High Court. However, due to limited email access among locals, the agency decided to set up a physical camp. Residents must now submit written complaints directly at the camp office, located on the upper floor of the SBI premises near Ferryghat in Dhamakhali.
Residents' grievances and legal issues
The temporary office has seen a steady influx of people from areas like Bermajur and Byrakhali. One resident, Imran Uddin Gharami, detailed how he purchased five bighas of land only to face extortion and fraudulent registration issues involving Sheikh Shahjahan's brother, Sirajuddin. Despite previous complaints to the BLRO and legal suggestions, the matter remained unresolved until recent arrests brought some hope for restitution.
Ongoing land disputes
The CBI has compiled a list of 130 individuals whose land is slated for return, including Imranuddin Gharami's wife, Momtaz Bibi. Despite her inclusion on the list, she has yet to reclaim her property, prompting her visit to the camp office. Many others with similar grievances arrived on Friday, seeking justice and the return of their land.
CBI's commitment to justice
The CBI's temporary camp underscores its commitment to resolving the Sandeshkhali violence and addressing residents' grievances. The agency continues to receive numerous complaints via email and in person, reflecting the community's pressing need for a resolution.
This proactive step by the CBI aims to restore peace and justice in Sandeshkhali, ensuring that all affected residents have their voices heard and their issues addressed comprehensively.
