Kolkata doctor rape-murder case: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday detained Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, for questioning. Ghosh was taken to the CGO Complex in Salt Lake for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor which took place on August 9. Facing backlash over the rape and murder of the doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Ghosh resigned from his post and government service on August 12, days after junior doctors demanded his removal for failing to provide security to the staff. Ghosh’s decision came a day after the West Bengal government removed the medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal Sanjay Vashisth, who was replaced by Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, the dean of student affairs, with additional responsibilities as superintendent.

Meanwhile, Ghosh has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking protection after alleging that his life is in danger. Responding to his plea, the court has directed the State government to provide him with police protection. Earlier on Thursday, CBI officers visited the residence of the doctor who was raped and murdered at a Kolkata hospital, and spoke to her parents as a part of their investigation, an official said. The investigators took note of the time they received the call from the hospital, informing them about the death of their daughter, he said. The officers also asked them about their daughter's friends, and whether she complained of any problems at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where she was a postgraduate trainee doctor, he added. an official said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has termed the incident a " very big crime" and called for the accused to be hanged. Her remarks followed incidents of vandalism and rampage outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the crime took place. The hospital was targeted by a large mob during ongoing protests demanding increased safety for women. The situation at the medical college has sparked widespread outrage and demonstrations across the city.
