Rishabh Pant is slowly establishing himself as the best wicketkeeper-batter for India in Tests. In just his 34th match, Pant equalled Dhoni's record of most Test centuries for India (6) on his return to the format after almost two years

Pant, who has a Test century in England, Australia, India and South Africa, has 2419 runs to his name in the format after 34 matches at an average of 44.80

Pant may not have had those type of returns in white-ball cricket, however, he is a monster performer in Test matches. Pant's overall average is 44.80, however, it goes up to 62.4 in Australia and 65 at home

With 11 fifties and six centuries already, Pant is back to his best format and how and certainly been better than MS Dhoni at this stage in Test matches. But can he maintain or even get better than this in the future?

MS Dhoni, who left Test captaincy pretty prematurely didn't always have a great record in Tests as a batter, having finished his career with an average of 38.09

Dhoni, who scored 4876 runs in his career, had notched up 1,778 of them by the time he played 34 Test matches, which is 641 less than Pant after the same number of games

Dhoni, who has multiple centuries to his name at home, scored only one overseas Test century, that too in Pakistan in 2006, which was coincidentally the only ton in that 34-match period

Dhoni had 14 fifties in that period while averaging 37, which is a bit lower than that of Pant. Hence, Pant obviously had better numbers at this point. As a wicketkeeper too, Pant has 121 catches and 14 stumpings to his name after 34 games and Dhoni had 81 and 15 respectively
