India have eight Test matches remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle. If they win four out of eight Test matches, it should be enough for them to qualify for the WTC final with the PCT reaching 64.03

If India can white-wash New Zealand 3-0 in the upcoming home series, they would have their PCT above the cut-off range of 58.5 - 58.77. Hence, they can afford a 5-0 defeat to Australia

However, to keep things firmly in their control, they need to win at least one Test match in Australia if not two. A fifth win will obviously take the PCT even further to 69.29.

This is why this win in Kanpur was extremely important for India to not leave things for Australia series and get majority of the points required to qualify in the home assignments only

The five-match Test series between India and Australia might almost be a decider as to which two teams go through to the WTC 2023-25 finale given both of them have acquired the top two places on the points table currently

Unless Sri Lanka make a late run for the WTC final spot. Sri Lanka have won three Test matches in a row, one in England and two at home against New Zealand. Sri Lanka are in third place with 55.56 PCT and have a tour to South Africa remaining and a home series against Australia.... Woah! Popcorn time
