Hardik Pandya not in captaincy plans to Sanju Samson being ignored in ODIs: Key talking points from India's squads for Sri Lanka series

The BCCI announced India's T20 and ODI squads for upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. While Rohit Sharma is set to lead the team in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav was named the captain in T20Is, ahead of Hardik Pandya. Let's take a look at key talking points from the squads-

Hardik Pandya, who has asked for a break from the ODIs, was not even named the vice-captain in T20Is despite him being Rohit Sharma's deputy at the T20 World Cup. Hardik, who had an all-timer T20 World Cup, would be gutted but he would have one less thing to worry about on the field

Sanju Samson would be feeling a little hard done by having being retained only in T20 squad and not the ODIs. Samson literally smashed a century when India last played an ODI in December 2023 but since Rishabh Pant returned, Samson was ignored

Ruturaj Gaikwad would be another person feeling a bit hard done given he did well in whichever role he was asked to perform by the team, whether at No 3 or No 4 during the Zimbabwe T20 series. However, he was nowhere to be seen

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, was the bigger gainer from the squad announcement. Not only he was in both the squads but the management has also given a big vote of confidence by choosing him as vice-captain both the white-ball formats

Since Gill retained his leadership position in T20Is, Abhishek Sharma was the unfortunate one to miss out from the T20 squad. Abhishek smashed a century in limited appearances in the Zimbabwe series and will hopefully be seen more in India colours soon in the shortest format

Mukesh Kumar was the unfortunate one from the bowling group to completely miss out from the selection despite his good show in the Zimbabwe series, including a four-fer in the final game

Like Gill's leadership skills, Riyan Parag was given a big vote of confidence being picked in both the squads. Parag is likely being groomed as a batter who can bowl, which India have lacked in the past. Similarly, Harshit Rana received his maiden ODI call-up after missing out on Zimbabwe T20Is

The announcement of the squad also saw central contract-less Shreyas Iyer into the mix once again for ODIs, his best format and would hope not to be shaken up from the side anytime soon

Another major talking point from the squad announcement was Ravindra Jadeja's absence from the ODI side. Jadeja, who had a forgettable T20 World Cup, seems to have lost the selectors' confidence in white-ball cricket and similarly Yuzvendra Chahal, who wasn't seen in either of the two squads
