Ajinkya Rahane was a long-term deputy when Virat Kohli was captain before his form led him to get dropped from the team.

Virat Kohli missed the first Test against New Zealand at home in 2021 and Rahane was named the captain. With Rahane being captain, Cheteshwar Pujara was named his deputy

With Rahane not being a certainty now because of his form, KL Rahul became the new vice-captain with Rohit Sharma injured ahead of South Africa tour.
