3 captains who failed to win IPL but won trophy in other T20 leagues

Faf du Plessis won his first T20 league trophy as a captain leading Saint Lucia Kings to their maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Du Plessis had won multiple titles with the Chennai Super Kings but this is his first as a captain and outside IPL as well

Faf du Plessis led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the last three seasons in the IPL. RCB reached the playoffs twice under him, however, haven't won a title yet. But they will be keen to retain him with du Plessis getting that trophy luck in CPL

Steve Smith, who has led Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL, won his second T20 title in the Major League Cricket with the Washington Freedom earlier this year in July

Smith came close to winning the IPL in 2017 with the Supergiants, however, didn't get over the line. Smith already had a T20 title in his name as a captain before he got to leading an IPL side, in 2011/12 with the Sydney Sixers in the inaugural Big Bash League

Aiden Markram continuing as captain of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20, led them to their second consecutive title after winning the tournament in the inaugural edition in 2023

Aiden Markram also led the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL in 2023, however, failed to replicate his success with the side here

Kieron Pollard has won a couple of T20 titles in the CPL as captain for Trinbago Knight Riders and Barbados Tridents, however, he hasn't led any team for a full season in the IPL
