Elections were held across the country to elect the 16th president.

The NDA had presented former Governor of Jharkhand, Droupadi Murmu, as their the presidential candidate.

The opposition fielded senior leader Yashwant Sinha for the presidential election.

Polling began at 10 AM with PM Modi being one of the first to vote at the Parliament House in New Delhi.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also seen casting his vote. 736 electors comprising 727 MPs and nine MLAs were permitted by the Election Commission to vote at the Parliament house.

Union Finance Nirmala Sitharaman cast her vote wearing a PPE kit as she had tested positive for Covid-19. The total turnout at the parliament house stood at 98.90 per cent.

Ex-PM Manmohan Singh arrived in a wheelchair to cast his vote. Meanwhile, several leaders like Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dhotre gave the presidential voting a miss due to health issues.

Voting concluded at 5 PM across the country. Ballot boxes were sealed and carried via flight to the national capital.

The next president will take oath on July 25 after the counting of votes that is slated to take place on July 21 in New Delhi.
