The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to 'Godfather of AI' Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield for their foundational discoveries and inventions that enabled machine learning with artificial neural networks.

The laureates used fundamental concepts from statistical physics to design artificial neural networks that function as associative memories and have use in everyday activities, including facial recognition and language translation.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John M Jumper for the use of artificial intelligence to predict the structure of proteins.

Half the prize was awarded to Baker "for computational protein design" while the other half was shared by Hassabis and Jumper "for protein structure prediction", the academy said.
