The beginning of October marked the Nobel Prize season, where Nobel committees come together in Stockholm and Oslo to announce the winners of the yearly awards.

Created in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, the prizes have been awarded for breakthroughs in science, literature and peace since 1901, while economics is a later addition.

The prize, widely regarded as among the most prestigious in the scientific world, is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is worth 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).

The Nobel Prize 2024 in Medicine was awarded to scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation.

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to 'Godfather of AI' Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield for their foundational discoveries and inventions that enabled machine learning with artificial neural networks.

The laureates used fundamental concepts from statistical physics to design artificial neural networks that function as associative memories and have use in everyday activities, including facial recognition and language translation.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John M Jumper for the use of artificial intelligence to predict the structure of proteins.

Half the prize was awarded to Baker "for computational protein design" while the other half was shared by Hassabis and Jumper "for protein structure prediction", the academy said.

South Korean author Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature for her "intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
