Keir Starmer, 61, is tipped to become the next British PM as Labour comfortably lead over Conservatives ahead of the July 4 elections with a margin of at least 20 points.

Starmer was born in 1963 in a poor household as the son of a toolmaker and a nurse. He was the first of his family to go to college and studied human rights law at Leeds University and Oxford.

He became the chief prosecutor for England and Wales between 2008 and 2013. He was knighted for his role in leading the Crown Prosecution Service.

Starmer entered politics in his 50s and was elected to Parliament in 2015. He served under former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who led the party to defeats in 2017 and 2019. Starmer succeeded Corbyn in 2020.

Keir Starmer married his wife Victoria, who is also a legal professional now working in occupational health for the National Health Service, in 2007. They have a son and a daughter and live in North London.
