Israel's Mossad agency pulled off a daring move by detonating thousands of communication devices used by Hezbollah in Lebanon, delivering a crippling blow to the Iran-backed militant group.

Mossad rose to prominence with the daring 1960 capture of Nazi mastermind Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eichmann was nabbed by Mossad agents, drugged, disguised and flown to Israel, where he was hanged in 1962.

Mossad launched 'Operation Wrath of God' in 1972 to avenge the massacre of Israeli athletes in the Munich Olympics. Mossad agents tracked down and assassinated several members responsible for the massacre, including members of Palestinian terror outfits.

Israel launched 'Operation Entebbe' in 1976 in Uganda in response to the hijacking of a civilian passenger flight between Tel Aviv and Paris. Mossad commandos managed to rescue 102 hostages and eliminated all hijackers - losing Yonatan Netanyahu, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's brother - in the operation.

Mossad has also planted numerous secret agents in Arab and other countries. The most famous of them was Eli Cohen, who infiltrated the highest ranks of the Syrian government by posing as a Syrian businessman before being discovered and executed in 1965.

When Israel was locked in a decades-long shadow war with Iran since 1979, Mossad agents are said to be responsible for the deaths of several Iranian nuclear scientists, which stalled Tehran's ambitious nuclear programme.

Mossad has launched several covert operations to assassinate targets, such as acid-filled condoms and glass-case explosives. It is also known for its cyberoperations, notably using a malware to hamper Iran's nuclear programme.

Some high-profile assassinations by Mossad include Hamas commander Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room in 2010. The incident inspired the American movie Kidon in 2013.
