Iran fired a barrage of over 180 missiles in its largest-ever attack on Israel, most of which were apparently intercepted by anti-missile defences employed by Israel, the United States and Jordan.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said it used hypersonic Fattah missiles for the first time on Tuesday, which caused only a few injuries. Some direct hits damaged buildings and ignited fires.

Much of the attention goes to the Iron Dome, Israel's state-of-the-art aerial defence system to fend off short-range rocket and missile attacks.

The Iron Dome uses radars to detect incoming threats and fires its own interceptor missiles to take them out. However, it is not Israel's only air defence system.

Israel has two other home-grown aerial defence systems apart from Iron Dome: David's Sling and Arrow 2 and 3.

David's Sling is designed to target medium and long-range missiles and has a range of 25 to 186 miles - useful for targeting ballistic missiles travelling at faster speeds. It was jointly created by Israel and the US.

The Arrow 2 and 3 systems are capable of handling much longer-range missiles like ICBMs that travel at very high altitudes - such as beyond the stratosphere. The Arrow 3 is believed to have a range of 1,500 miles.

All these systems along with the Iron Dome were utilised when Iran launched over 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles at Israel in April, 99 per cent of which were intercepted.
