How Kolkata police dealt with 'Nabanna Abhiyaan': 200 arrested, BJP calls for 'Bharat Bandh' | IN PICS

Hundreds of students participated in Chhatra Samaj's 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

A huge number of youth holding Tricolours in their hands and banners demanding action in the rape case were seen marching towards the secretariat in the different parts of Kolkata.

Protesters began pelting stones and glass bottles at the police at several spots where their progress was stopped in Kolkata and Howrah.

They also broke down barricades and multiple police vehicles were vandalised. Some vehicles and a police two-wheeler were torched by agitators in Kolkata and adjacent Howrah.

Police resorted to the protesters by lobbing tear gas shells and firing water cannons to quell the chaos.

Kolkata police also resorted to large-scale lathi charging to disperse the aggressive crowd converging at Nabanna, the state secretariat.

The violence, which lasted for nearly four hours, led to several injuries on both sides including senior police officers and women protestors.

According to police, over 200 people were arrested from across the state.

At least 15 personnel of the Kolkata Police and 14 from the state police force were injured in the clashes.

The BJP criticised Kolkata police's use of force against protesters and called for a 12-hour 'Bengal Bandh' on Wednesday.

The BJP has also demanded that the CBI conduct a polygraph test on Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, who the party alleged had initially said that the victim died by suicide.
