Nine people were booked for allegedly being involved in a triple talaq incident of a woman in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia over dowry, the police said on Friday (November 17). The accused people, including her husband, were booked under the Dowry Prohibition Act. Shabnam Khatoon, the complainant, had lodged a complaint at the Sikandarpur Police Station area against her husband, identified as Gausul Azam, who is a resident of the Shahpur Anfaga village, and eight others of his family for allegedly assaulting her and demanding dowry, SHO Dinesh Pathak said.
Shabnam said in her complaint that she got married to Gausul two years ago according to Muslim customs, however, she was given pressure to bring Rs 1.5 lakh after marriage as her husband wanted to go to Kuwait, Pathak said.
Woman assaulted
The complainant could not give the amount due to poor financial condition of her family. She alleged that her in-laws assaulted her over the money after which she returned to her maternal home. Her husband went to Kuwait after some time, the police said.
“According to the woman, her husband recently returned from abroad and again started pressuring her for dowry and when she again refused, gave her triple talaq over the phone,” the police said.
The SHO said that the allegations by the women are being investigated.
