In a major success, the security personnel detected a huge amount of gold at the Lucknow airport, said customs officials on Wednesday.
"2 youths arrested with gold worth Rs 1.07 crores at Lucknow airport. Both were hiding the gold in their underwear. They have come from Sharjah. Further probe underway," they said.
Man uses wheelchair to dodge customs
In another incident happened in the last week, (June 7), a wheelchair-bound man was arrested at the international airport in Delhi for smuggling in gold valued at Rs 1.13 crore concealed inside his shoes.
The accused, who hails from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Dubai. The passenger, who is in his late twenties, took wheelchair service from the airport despite having no apparent injuries.
A detailed search resulted in recovery of 2.15 kg of gold in paste form, valued at Rs 1.13 crore, concealed inside the shoes worn by him. The passenger, who works in Dubai, was lured by some travel agents to smuggle gold in lieu of travel tickets.
Even the idea of using wheelchair to dodge the customs authorities was suggested by the travel agents.
People coming from Gulf countries often try to bring gold hiding from the authorities to evade taxes levied on the metal.
