A 20-year-old pregnant woman in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar has alleged that her father-in-law raped her in the absence of her husband. Shockingly, when the victim woman told his husband about the incident, he not only refused to keep her with him, citing Islamic law (Shariat law) but also said that she was no longer his wife.
He claimed that she had become his father's wife and his mother after the relationship with his father, so he could no longer live with her. With this statement, he threw his wife from their home. The victim woman has now filed a complaint against her father-in-law, husband, and mother-in-law at the local police station, seeking justice.
On the basis of the woman's complaint, the police have registered a case under the 376 Act against the accused father-in-law and started investigating the entire incident.
What is the case?
The incident occurred in the Kakrouli police station area of Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh. The victim, a 20-year-old woman named Tabassum, resides in the village of Sikandarpur, which falls under the Mirapur police station area. She had married Mudassir, the son of Istekhaar, on August 19, 2022.
Tabassum alleged that ever since her marriage, her father-in-law Istekhaar had been keeping an evil eye on her. On July 5, 2023, her husband Mudassir had taken his mother to see a physician (hakim) to Meerapur. Taking advantage of that her father-in-law forcibly raped her and even threatened to kill her if she reported the incident to anyone.
'Husband threw me out of the house'
When her mother-in-law and husband returned home in the evening, she narrated the entire incident to her mother-in-law and husband. After this, Mudassir threw his wife Tabassum out of the house stating that she no longer had any relationship with him. He claimed that since his father had established a relationship with her, she had become his father's wife and his mother and for this reason, he could no longer stay with her. The mother-in-law and husband physically assaulted Tabassum and then forcibly threw her from the house.
Case registered
The victim woman has been emotionally shattered by the behaviour of her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband. She was so frightened by the physical harassment that she did not inform anyone about the incident and came to her father's house. A month after the incident, the victim woman and her family members lodged a formal complaint with the police against the accused mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband, seeking justice. The police have registered a case against the accused father-in-law Istekhar under sections 376, 323, and 506, and they have initiated a thorough investigation into the entire matter.
