Ghosi assembly by-poll: Congress has decided to extend support to Samajwadi Party candidate in the upcoming Ghosi Assembly by-polls, the state party president Ajay Rai said on Saturday. Samajwadi Party declared former MLA Sudhakar Singh as its candidate for the by-poll to the Ghosi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh's Mau district.
The Congress has decided not to field its candidate on this seat and the party has also said that it will support the Samajwadi Party candidate on the Ghosi assembly seat. The newly appointed state party has issued a statement giving support to SP in the Ghosi by-election.
"Samajwadi Party is a part of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.), therefore the Congress will support the candidate of the Samajwadi Party in the by-election to be held on September 05, 2023, under the 354-Ghosi assembly under Mau district of Uttar Pradesh and I appeal all the Congress workers to provide full cooperation to the declared Samajwadi Party candidate," Rai said in a statement.
“I would request all of my friends, my fellow workers in the Congress that they should extend their support and help to Samajwadi Party candidate from Ghosi, Sudhakar Singh in the bypolls. All of you work with full strength, and make him victorious," he said in a video shared on X
Uttar Pradesh BJP vice-president Vijay Bahadur Pathak while reacting to this decision said this support between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party is "not new" and has been made keeping the 2024 general elections "in mind".
“The people of Ghosi and the state have full faith in the double-engine government of the BJP. This support is not new. In Rae Bareli and Amethi, the Congress won earlier elections with the support of the Samajwadi Party. Definitely, this is a decision, which has been made keeping in mind the 2024 Lok Sabha elections," he said.
Ghosi by-poll
BJP has named Dara Singh Chauhan as a candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi for by-poll. The party has fielded Dara Singh Chauhan from Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh.
The Ghosi seat in Uttar Pradesh fell vacant after Samajwadi Party’s Dara Singh Chauhan resigned to join the BJP. Former SP MLA Dara Singh Chauhan returned to BJP in July this year. Chauhan had submitted his resignation to Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana on July 15. Chauhan was a cabinet minister in the previous Yogi Adityanath government but had resigned ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections and joined the SP.
The elections to the Ghosi seat will be held on September 5 and the counting of votes will take place on September 8.
