Five people were detained in connection with a clash which erupted between two groups belonging to different communities in in the Chandaus area of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh over the route of a ‘shobha yatra’, police said on Monday (October 16).
One person sustained injuries in the clash which broke out on Sunday evening.
The police filed two separate FIRs out of which one was registered this morning on the complaint of a man, Vishnu, who sustained minor injuries during the clash, a senior police officer said.
According to the FIR, the clash broke out yesterday when the organisers of the procession allegedly attempted to “alter the sanctioned route of the procession” and tried to pass it through a sensitive area.
A case under Indian Penal Code sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149(unlawful assembly) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) was registered in the matter.
“Five people belonging to both the groups have been detained,” the police said.
Police action on the incident
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani said that the police made a timely intervention which prevented the situation from escalating.
“The procession later proceeded peacefully along the designated route,” the officer said.
The SSP said that there is no evidence of the occurrence of any brick-batting during the clash.
An investigation into the matter is underway.
Following the incident, a large crowd had gathered at the police station in Chandaus on Sunday night, demanding immediate arrest of those responsible for the clash.
Senior district officials pacified the crowd. Security has been beefed up in the area, the police added.
