Uniform Civil Code: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati on Sunday exuded confidence in the spirit of the Uniform Civil Code but said that her party do not support the way the Centre is trying to implement it in the country. While addressing the public during a press conference, Mayawati charged the PM Modi-led government with 'forcefully' implementing the Uniform Civil Code in India. BSP chief said that UCC should be implemented through consensus and awareness. "However, it (awareness and consensus) is not being done. Indulging in narrow politics in the garb of UCC is not in the interest of the country. And this is being done," she told a press conference here.

"We do not support the way BJP is trying to implement UCC"

"Our party (BSP) is not against the implementation of UCC but we do not support the way BJP is trying to implement Uniform Civil Code in the country. It is not right to politicise this issue and forcefully implement UCC in the country," said Mayawati taking a swipe at the Centre.

BSP leader further asserted that UCC will be beneficial to strengthen the country and to unite the Indians. She also said this will develop a sense of brotherhood among people.

"It will develop a sense of brotherhood"

"The implementation of UCC will strengthen the country and unite Indians. It will also develop a sense of brotherhood among people. The forceful implementation of UCC is not right, politicising this issue will create problems. The govt should currently focus on issues like inflation, unemployment, education and healthcare," she added.

Emptied out by exodus, BSP begins hunt for 'potential leaders' in UP

After facing a massive exodus of leaders from the party in recent years, Mayawati has now instructed seniors to “hunt” for “potential” leaders from within the party to represent castes where it lacks prominence.

“We do not see these leaders coming back or ‘Behenji’ (Mayawati) re-inducting them. The blanks need to be filled from within the party. Partymen will now scout for potential leaders at every level. They will be groomed into leaders. The party may also import leaders from outside to plug the gap,” said a BSP functionary.
