Uttar Pradesh crime news: A patrolling team of Uttar Pradesh Police monitoring the illegal sand mining activities was allegedly attacked by suspected sand mafia in the Baldev area of Mathura in which three constables sustained injuries, police said on Sunday.
A case was registered against the accused persons under the relevant sections.
The police have arrested two accused out of the eight persons who have been named in the case.
What police said
Sanjay Tyagi, station house officer, Baldev, detailed the incident and said, "A mobile police team was patrolling the area on Friday evening to monitor illegal mining activities. When they tried to stop a sand-laden tractor-trolley near the Nagla Lekha village, the driver crashed the vehicle into a motorcycle and fled."
The police said that when the police team chased the driver who was identified as Jaiveer Singh, the police were attacked by the accused persons identified as Subhash, Prempal, Ompal, Pratap, Harichand, and Tyagi. Out of them, Harichand and Pratap were arrested shortly after the incident while the remaining are absconding, the police said.
The constables who were injured in the incident were identified as Abhishek, Vishal and Mohit.
Soon after the attack, additional police personnel were rushed to the spot, the police said.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
Police constable killed on duty by sand mafia in Karnataka
In an unrelated incident from Mathura, a police constable was run over while on duty attempting to stop a tractor transporting sand that was illegally mined in Karnataka's Kalaburagi on Friday (June 16), the police said.
The deceased constable was identified as Mayura, 51, who worked at Nelogi Police Station. A case was registered pertaining to the matter. The accused driver, identified as Siddanna, was arrested in the case and later confessed to the crime.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameswhara announced an ex-gratia for the family of the constable who died in the line of duty. "We have already taken action. It is unfortunate that our Policeman has died on duty. We have arrested a person who has done it, we are searching for one more person. It will be done very soon. Rs 30 lakh compensation has already been given to that family. On humanitarian grounds, that family will also get employment."
State Minister Priyank Kharge said that he has given strict orders to the police department to 'immediately take legal action' against the illegal sand mining.
