Rae Bareli Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that it was a very 'emotional moment' for him after his mother (Sonia Gandhi) handed over the responsibility of serving the people of Rae Bareli to him adding he promises to respect her words. Apart from Kerala's Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi is also contesting Lok Sabha polls from Rae Bareli, which has been a Congress' stronghold for decades.
"This moment was very emotional for me! Mother handed over the flag of Rae Bareli's 100 years of service tradition to me today with confidence. I accept this responsibility with pride and promise that I will respect every word said by my mother," Rahul Gandhi wrote on social media platform X.
Earlier today, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi made an emotional appeal to the people of Rae Bareli for her son Rahul Gandhi who is contesting the seat.
Sonia Gandhi arrived halfway through a joint rally, addressed by Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, in Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and started her speech with, “My head bows before you because you allowed me to serve you as MP. Raebareli is family for me – just like Amethi.”
Sonia Gandhi said that she had many pleasant memories of her family’s old relationship with this constituency.
“These memories are pious like Ganga Maa. Indira ji had a special place for Rae Bareli in her heart. I gave Rahul and Priyanka the same lessons that I had learnt from Indira ji and Rae Bareli, the foremost being compassion for the poor.”
She added, “I have taught them not to fear if they encounter difficulties in serving the people.”
She ended her speech with “Today, I am giving my son you. Please treat him like your own and Rahul will not let you down. Mera aanchal aapke pyar aur ashirwad se bhara hai.”
