The State Transport Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Singh has directed traffic police to suspend the driving license of anyone for at least three months for breaking traffic rules thrice, as reported by the Times of India.

Singh issued a letter and referred to a 2014 Supreme Court-appointed road safety committee’s recommendation on suspension of driving licence for three months under Section 19 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, if a person is caught over-speeding, red light jumping, overloading goods or carrying persons in goods carriages, drunken driving and using mobile phone while driving more than three times.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a review meeting and directed officials to track down repeat offenders. As per the Transport Department, as many as 7,070 driving licences were suspended across the state between January and September.

“We seized the licences of repeat offenders and sent it to the transport department for their suspension,” DCP (traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav told the Times of India. Meanwhile, RTO Ghaziabad PK Singh said there are certain criteria to suspend the driving licences. “If there are up to three violations of certain offences, licences are suspended. For the same violations – like speeding, drunken driving – licences can be cancelled in case of more than three violations,” he said in an exclusive interview to the Times of India.
