Two killed, at least dozen injured after water tank collapsed in Mathura, rescue operation underway

Many people are still trapped under the debris of an overhead water tank which collapsed on Sunday evening. The District Magistrate has called in the NDRF for fast-paced rescue work. The overhead water tank was constructed three years ago by Jal Nigam under the Gangajal Drinking Water Project.

In a tragic incident, two people died while at least a dozen got injured after a water tank suddenly collapsed in a residential colony in Mathura on Sunday evening. Many houses came under the grip of debris 

According to information, the accident happened at  6 pm in Krishna Vihar Colony, developed by UP Awas Vikas Parishad, causing damage to many nearby houses. After getting information, the team of police and firemen reached the spot and pulled out 12 injured from the debris, whose condition is said to be very serious.

As of now rescue work is underway. Teams of firefighters, police, teams of revenue, municipal corporations, and health department are engaged in rescue work.

Casualties likely to rise

The casualties are likely to rise as some people, including children, got buried under the debris of the 2.5 lakh litre tank, the officials said. According to District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh, NDRF has also been called for the rescue. He added that the injured have been admitted to the district hospital, where they are getting treatment.

Dr Bhudev Prasad, in charge of the Rapid Response Team of the Health Department, said that initially four injured were rescued from the debris, but now this number has reached a dozen. Likely, more people are still trapped in the debris, he added.

All the top officials of the district including District Magistrate Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Shailesh Kumar Pandey are monitoring the rescue and relief work on the spot. The Revenue Department is working to provide food and accommodation facilities to the affected families.

Construction was done only two years ago

The District Magistrate said that the construction of the tank was completed in 202. He added that the tank was built by Jal Nigam with a cost of Rs 6 crore under the Gangajal Drinking Water Project. He added that the collapse in just three years ofd construction will be investigated.

Indian army reaches site

A team of Indian army has reached the site of mishap and started contributing in the rescue work. The visuals show the army personnel operating an electric demolition hammer on a huge part of concrete debris to accelerate the rescue and relief operation.
