13 polling personnel die after fever, high BP in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur

Although the exact reason for their death is being ascertained, recent days have witnessed blistering heatwaves across the state. Mirzapur Lok Sabha sear is slated for polls in the final phase on June 1.

As many as 13 election personnel died at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur following high fever and high blood pressure, Medical college principal said on Friday  However the exact reason for the deaths is being ascertained, he added.

Dr. Raj Bahadur Kamal, the principal of Maa Vindhyavasini Autonomous State Medical College stated that the deceased included seven jawans of Home Guards, 3 sanitation workers, one clerk posted at the Chief Medical Officer's office, one Consolidation officer (Chakbandi Adhikari), and one peon in the Home Guard team.

He further said that they had high blood pressure and a high-grade fever when brought to the facility for treatment. Notably, the region has been witnessing unusually high temperatures for the past several days. 

10 poll personnel died in Bihar

Similarly in Bihar, 14 people, including 10 poll personnel, died out of heat stroke in Bihar, officials reported on Friday. According to the Disaster Management Department most of the fatalities were from Bhojpur, where five election duty officials died due to heatstroke. Additionally, three election officials died in Rohtas, and one each in Kaimur and Aurangabad districts lost their lives to extreme hot weather. Four other individuals lost their lives in different parts of the state.

Subsequently, the Bihar government has initiated process to grant ex gratia to the families of deceased. 

Maximum temperature nears 50 °C

According to the Meteorological Department, the heat wave is expected to continue till June 2 at different places in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and Odisha. Heat wave will prevail at different places in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand on Saturday.

On May 30, Varansai, Babatpur and Bulandshahar reported maximum temperature of 47.0 °C, 47.8 °C and 48 °C respectively. It is the 2nd highest maximum temperature recorded ever. Moreover, several cities like Jhansi, Agra, and Kanpur touched nearly 50 degrees Celcius of maximum temperature this season.
