Uttar Pradesh: In a tragic incident, former cabinet minister and veteran politician from Uttar Pradesh, Hari Shankar Tiwari passed away at his residence in Gorakhpur on Tuesday night. He was 90 years old.

According to the information, the Samajwadi Party (SP) strongman had been suffering from acute kidney problem for the last several years. Following Tiwari's demise, his son  Vinay Shankar Tiwari said that his father's last rites will be performed at Mukti Path in Barhalghanj town of Gorakhpur district on Wednesday (May 17). 

Akhilesh Yadav expresses condolences 

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the demise of Tiwari in a tweet. "Former Minister Mr Harishankar Tiwari passes away, very sad! May God grant peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense sorrow. Heartfelt tribute!," he wrote on Twitter.

Who was Hari Shankar Tiwari?

Harishankar Tiwari was born in Barhalganj town and represented Chillupar seat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly from 1985 to 2002 for six times. He became a railway contractor after completing his education and later emerged as a strong Brahmin leader of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

He was a founding member of the Loktantrik Congress party. He was a cabinet minister from 1997 to 2007 in Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, Rajnath Singh, Mayawati, and Mulayam Singh Yadav-led governments. 

Tiwari was considered a political heavyweight and had established himself as a leader of Brahmins in the state. His elder son Bhishma Shankar Tiwari has been an MP from the Sant Kabir Nagar constituency, while his younger son Vinay Shankar Tiwari represented the father's traditional seat Chillupar in the last UP assembly (2017-2022) from the Bahujan Samaj Party.

It should be mentioned here that People in the Jatashankar area mourned the death of Tiwari, who once wielded enormous influence in the politics of Purvanchal.
