Yogi Adityanath on Electric Vehicles: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that all state government vehicles will be gradually replaced with EVs by 2030. To meet this target, departments have been told that purchase of EVs can be done without tendering, on the basis of nomination and that if required, more than the maximum limit set for purchase of EVs can also be spent.

A government spokesperson explained that the two provisions have been made because EVs are currently more expensive than diesel and petrol vehicles and therefore, there is a need to allow for additional expenditure on their purchase.

This, he said, would be offset by the savings on fuel in later years.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh government has exempted road tax and registration fee for all kinds of new EVs purchased in the state for the next three years from October 14, 2022. In addition to this, EVs manufactured in Uttar Pradesh will get the exemption for the next five years.

As per the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, 100 per cent tax exemption will be given on electric vehicles (EV) sold and registered in Uttar Pradesh from October 14, 2022, to October 13, 2025, says a notification issued by Principal Secretary L Venkateshwarlu. According to the government notification, in the fourth and fifth year of the Electric Vehicle Policy, i.e. from October 14, 2025 to October 13, 2027, a 100 per cent exemption will be given to EVs manufactured and sold in the state.

The exemption will be given on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). The exemption in road tax and registration fee in UP will be in addition to the subsidy provided by the Central government on EVs.
