Bharatiya Janta Party named Dinesh Sharma as its candidate for Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh.
Sharma was the former UP Deputy CM from March 2017 to March 2022.
The bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh vacated following the death of a sitting member will be held on September 15, the Election Commission (EC) said in a notification in August.
Hardwar Dubey of the BJP passed away on June 26. His term as a Rajya Sabha member was to otherwise end in November 2026.
Sharma (59), who had earlier also served as the mayor of Lucknow, did not contest the UP Assembly elections 2022 as he was a member of the state Legislative Council. Post-elections, he was replaced by Brajesh Pathak as the deputy chief minister of the state.
