Bypolls to two vacant Uttar Pradesh legislative council seats on 29 May | Details inside

The two seats fell vacant following the resignation of Laxman Prasad Acharya and the death of Banwari Lal.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday (May 4) announced that the by-elections to the two vacant Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats would be held on May 29. The two seats fell vacant following the resignation of Laxman Prasad Acharya and the death of Banwari Lal, both on February 15. A senior BJP leader Acharya resigned after he was appointed the Governor of Sikkim.

Election details 

The EC said polling and counting of votes would be held on May 29 for both seats. The notification for the by-polls would be issued on May 11 and the final day for submitting nominations is on 18 May. The nomination scrutiny will occur on 19 May, and the deadline for candidate withdrawal is 22 May. 

The ECI confirmed that polling will take place on 29 May from 9 am to 4 pm, with vote counting beginning at 5 pm on the same day.

The ECI has instructed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary to assign a senior officer to ensure adherence to covid-19 containment protocols during the election preparations and proceedings. “The Chief Secretary, Uttar Pradesh is being directed to depute a senior officer from the State to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the election,” it said.
