Atiq Ahmed son Asad's encounter: Meet top cops Navendu Naveen, Vimal Singh, who led STF team

Umesh Pal Murder case: Gangster Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and another accused Ghulam Mohammed, who shot dead Umesh Pal in Prayagraj in broad daylight, were on the run. STF had launched a manhunt to nab them.

Umesh Pal Murder case: In a crucial turn of event, Gangster Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and a shooter Ghulam Mohammed, who shot dead Umesh Pal in Prayagraj in broad daylight, were killed in an encounter by STF (Special Task Force) Uttar Pradesh Police. 

The 12-member STF team was led by Navendu Kumar Naveen and Vimal Kumar Singh. 

Who is Navendu Kumar Naveen

According to UP police website, Naveen is DSP in STF whose posting district is Lucknow. Naveen hails from Bihar's Saran. He is a police officer of 2017 cadre. Navendu was inducted in the Special Task Force in the year 2017. He had received bullet injuries in his hand and neck in an encounter with a dacoit a few years ago. Last year itself, Navendu had killed two prize-awarded criminals. For this, he has been awarded the President's Bravery Medal in 2008 and the National Bravery Medal in 2014. Last year in 2022 also, Navendu was awarded the President's Award on Independence Day for his bravery.

Who is Vimal Kumar Singh
Singh is DSP in STF. His is posted in Lucknow district. He belongs to Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. He is a police officer of 2018 cadre.

What happened today

Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad's son Asad and an accomplice, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police in Jhansi on Thursday. 

"Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and were carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were killed in an encounter with the UP STF team," said Special Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prasahant Kumar.

"The UP STF team was led by Deputy SP Navendu and Vimal. Sophisticated foreign made weapons were recovered from the accused. Further details are awaited," the officer added.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder case of then BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj's Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, Asad, Ghulam and others. The FIR was lodged under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Atiq  Ahmad is also an accused in the 2005 Raju Pal murder case.
