Little did anyone among the hospital staff or the patients at AIIMS Rishikesh imagine that the Uttarakhand Police would resort to driving through a crowded 'waiting gallery' to arrest a nursing officer accused in a molestation case.
However, the now viral video posted on Thursday confirmed the Uttarakhand Police's action, which was said to be conducted to ensure safe passage for the accused amid the boiling anger against him by other hospital members.
Speaking of the incident, which is said to have occurred on Tuesday, the police said they had to resort to this method since the staff was very angry and restless to take action against the accused, who allegedly molested a female doctor at the premier health facility.
"On May 19, a female Junior Resident Doctor reported a sexual assault to the AIIMS administration. According to the Vishakha guidelines, a committee was formed to look into the matter. The accused had been suspended the next day. But in the meantime, he was admitted to the psychiatric ward in the hospital. The police were unaware of the happenings because an internal inquiry by the hospital was being carried out. Seeing that he had been admitted, the hospital staff called the police. Since the staff was very angry because of the sequence of events, we needed a safe passage to take the accused out. So we used the emergency/VIP ramp to safely evacuate the patient-cum-accused... No patients were hurt or troubled because of this," said SSP Dehradun Ajay Singh.
Meanwhile, AIIMS Rishikesh also released a clarification in support of the authorities' actions. Elaborating on the incident, AIIMS Rishikesh Director Meenu Singh said, "An incident took place where a lady doctor was misbehaved with by one of the doctors. The accused was admitted to the psychiatric ward...The doctors were restless to take action against him, and they had done a gherao of the ward. The police used the car to get the accused out...The ramp used for our battery-operated vehicles was used by the police...It was an emergency measure and no one was injured."
About the Case
The culprit, Satish Kumar, who is currently in custody, is accused of sexually abusing a female doctor inside an operating room at AIIMS Rishikesh. The female doctor also alleged that he sent her an explicit SMS. Following the complaint, the hospital staff suspended the accused, but there has been a demand to fire Kumar immediately, arguing that suspension was insufficient punishment for his alleged offense. Additionally, a demand for the suspension of Assistant Nursing Superintendent Sinoj, who had put Kumar on duty, has also been raised.
