Malaysian authorities to summon Zakir Naik for questioning over controversial remarks
Members of an "IS-inspired" terror group arrested from Maharashtra in January for allegedly planning mass killing at a temple were inspired by speeches of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, according to an ATS charge sheet filed in a Mumbai court.
After Zakir Naik’ s bail, Malaysia now bails out Pakistan.
"Government of India has made a formal request for extradition of Dr Zakir Naik. We would continue to pursue the matter with Malaysia," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said here on Wednesday.
ED said that Zakir Naik's trust got donations from India as well as other nations.
Two of Sri Lanka's major cable TV operators, have dropped controversial Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik's Peace TV from their channel following the country's worst terror attacks on Easter Sunday which killed over 250 people, according to a media report.
The agency is probing the case after taking cognisance of an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Naik, who is said to be based in Malaysia at present.
The central agency's application seeking permission to attach four properties in the Mazgaon area that were owned by Naik was allowed on Thursday by the special court.
Naik, who left India in July, 2016, is wanted on terror and money laundering charges. In January, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made a formal request to Malaysia to deport Naik.
The MEA was asked to provide copy of letter or request made to Malaysia seeking extradition of Naik and also the copy of any communication response from that government.
Zakir, who is the founder of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), left India in 2016 for Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residency.
The controversial Islamic preacher sneaked out of India in 2016 to Malaysia where he has reportedly been granted permanent residency.
His statement came amid some reports that he was being deported to India from Malaysia.
A division bench of justices R M Savant and Revati Mohite Dere was hearing a petition filed by Naik seeking a direction to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to submit reports on the probe carried out by them against Naik.
The government has issued a show cause notice to the school administration, and a three-member inquiry committee has been set up to inquire into the matter.
Naik is accused of spreading hatred through his speeches, funding terror groups and laundering money. The NIA last year had registered a criminal case against him.
The agency said it has already moved the NIA court for a chargesheet against Naik and will once again petition Interpol for a RCN.
Zahid added that despite India revoking Zakir's passport, Malaysia would not revoke his permanent residency status here, as he had not violated any local laws.
