Polls in the state were organised amid boycott calls by the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party
The state will vote for municipal body polls after 13 years. The last poll were held in 2005. The five year term of the elected body ended in February, 2010.
All arrangements were made by the election authorities for the JNUSU polls, which were closely watched in the aftermath of various controversies that rocked the universities across the country in the recent past.
According to the Election Commission, 3,459 candidates are contesting for 272 general seats of the National Assembly, while 8,396 candidates are running for 577 general seats of the four provincial assemblies - Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
The number of constituencies going to polls makes it one of the largest such exercises in recent times. Even as the results from Monday's polling cannot be deemed as an indicator for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the political pundits will be watching it closely.
The Election Commission (EC) had on May 11 postponed the election in Bengaluru's RR Nagar assembly segment to May 28 from May 12 following recovery of nearly 10,000 voters ID cards from a flat in the constituency.
