UP Municipal Election 2023: The Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission on Sunday announced to hold urban local body polls in the state in two phases, on May 4 and 11.
AIMIM's state party chief Shaukat Ali said, "The 2017 elections were polarised by the BJP through the media. The Muslims thought that the Samajwadi Party could defeat the BJP."
The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the UP Legislative Council polls but had to settle with the loss of the important Varanasi seat. For the ruling BJP, which came back to power with a two-thirds majority in the recently concluded assembly elections, it will be an opportunity to make itself the single-largest party in the House, and thereby enjoy a majority in both Houses of Uttar Pradesh Legislature.
These seats are spread across 35 local authorities' constituencies. The biennial poll was earlier planned on two dates but now it will be conducted together on April 9. Counting will take place on April 12.

The Election Commission of India's voter turnout app showed Amethi recorded 55.86 per cent voting, Ayodhya 58.01 per cent, Bahraich 54.60 per cent, Barabanki 54.65 per cent, Chitrakoot 59.64 per cent and Gonda 54.
Polling was reported to be peaceful, barring in Pratapgarh's Kunda assembly seat, where Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Gulshan Yadav's convoy was allegedly attacked by some people, police said.
The districts where poling is being held are Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Banda and Fatehpur.

The claims by Thakur came a day ahead of the third phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP and the SP are locked in a direct contest.
Elaborating on the BJP's schemes, he said, "Bua-bhatija ran their governments for 15 years but did any house get gas cylinders? Whereas 1.66 lakh mothers have got cylinders and stoves and we have decided to provide one free cylinder on Holi and Diwal," he said.
The elections were conducted for a single-phase election in 40 seats in Goa, 70 seats in Uttarakhand, and for 55 seats in the second phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Voting for the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections for 58 Assembly seats covering 11 districts of the state began today at 7 am. The voting will conclude at 6 pm today.
TMC will stay out of the race in the upcoming UP assembly elections, and will support Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party.
