Vinesh Phogat was on the cusp of making history but was deemed overweight and therefore not fit to compete in the 50 KG weight category. The champion wrestler was slated to take on Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA in the gold medal match.
India's decorated wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who had qualified for the Gold medal match in the 50kg category for women at the Paris Olympics, was disqualified from participation due to being overweight. Phogat will hence finish last and will not be able to return with any medal.
Tokyo Olympics bronze-medallist Bajrang Punia was handed a provisional suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) indefinitely for refusing to undergo a doping test after his bouts in Olympic Qualifiers.
The United World Wrestling had lifted WFI's suspension "considering all the elements and information". However, the decision has met with backlash from the wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshee Malikkh as they cited that the former WFI chief and his allies will be in power again.
