A Delhi court has directed the Tihar Jail authorities to provide security to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid in the jail premises, after he was sent to 14-days judicial custody in connection with a case relating to the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February.
Khalid is accused of hatching a criminal conspiracy to cause communal unrest by inciting people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens.

A man wearing a white shirt pushed Umar Khalid and fired at him when he was standing near a tea-stall outside Constitution Club of India in central Delhi.
The order came while hearing Khalid’s plea that challenged the university order imposing a fine against him.
The 2016 event was organised in the JNU campus against Afzal Guru’s hanging during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.
