Aadhaar number is a 12-digit random number issued by the UIDAI -- Unique Identification Authority of India-- to the residents of India.
The UIDAI told a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao that using Aadhaar biometrics to identify bodies would be contrary to the Aadhaar Act.
Aadhaar issuing body UIDAI has asserted that schools cannot make the 12-digit biometric identifier a pre-condition for student admission and warned that doing so will be against the recent order of the Supreme Court.
A petitioner through his plea, has said his Constitutional rights have been violated due to the negligence of UIDAI.
Pandey, a 1984-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, would continue to hold the additional charge of UIDAI CEO and Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) Chairman till further instructions.
The own employees of the authority will directly supervise the kendras, the UIDAI sources said.
Physical Aadhaar card can be used for verification in an offline mode if produced voluntarily, the UIDAI clarified.
AEPS is a payment service developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) allowing banks, financial institutions to use 'Aadhaar' number and online UIDAI authentication for transactions through their respective business correspondent service centres.
The proposed number for disconnection doing the rounds in the mentioned reports is almost half of the number of mobile phones in the country.
As per legal understanding of the authority so far, offline options are in conformity with the recent Supreme Court ruling, UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey said.
A circular to this effect has already been issued to the telecom service providers (TSPs), including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and others.
"There was broad discussion with the minister on things that can be done to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court judgement. He has asked UIDAI to work on it," an official source told PTI.
Stating that private entities or individuals cannot avail Aadhaar data to provide consumer services, the apex court struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act which allowed sharing of data with private entities.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now decided to go a step further to enable such enrolment through provision of Aadhaar machines and accordingly, it will facilitate the availability of two machines per taluka.
A report recently claimed that Aadhaar software and database have been compromised by a software patch that purportedly disables crucial safety features of the enrolment software.
The clarification came after a report from a media outlet stated that the Aadhaar database, which contains the biometrics and personal information of over one billion Indians, had been hacked by a software patch which reportedly disables critical security features.
