Typhoon Yagi and the landslides and floods it triggered have killed at least 127 people, and 54 others are missing in northern Vietnam, the disaster management agency said on Tuesday. Most of the victims were killed in landslides and flash floods, the agency said in a report.
Typhoon Yagi, Asia's most powerful storm this year, left 59 dead in northern Vietnam and widespread damage as it churned westwards, preliminary government estimates showed on Monday, while the weather agency warned of more floods and landslides.
Typhoon Yagi, with maximum winds of 234 kmph, is registered as the world's second-most powerful tropical cyclone in 2024 so far after Hurricane Beryl. It brought heavy rains and speedy winds to Hong Kong, forcing several businesses and schools to close on Friday.
Typhoon Shanshan is moving slowly towards the Shikoku island, bringing heavy rain and floods that have killed six people so far and cut off power to 250,000 households. Travel services have been suspended and factories also shut down operations on Friday.
Mekkhala is the second typhoon that landed in coastal areas of east China over the past week.
Nuri hit Hailing Island in Yangjiang city at around 8.50 a.m., becoming the first typhoon to make a landfall in China this year, Xinhua news agency quoted the NMC as saying.
