A bill which provides a mechanism for social, economic and educational empowerment of transgenders by defining their identity and rights to prohibit discrimination against them was introduced in Lok Sabha on Friday.
Passage of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, which aims at empowering the community by defining and protecting their rights, is one of the priorities of the Social Justice and Empowerment ministry in the first 100 days agenda of the second term of the Narendra Modi government, an official source said.
As per the complaint filed by one of the victims, two sari-clad transgenders came to her house in Vasai area on June 16 and claimed her family had a "curse", and that they would help her get rid of it, police spokesman Hemant Katkar said.
This is the first time that transgenders voted under the category since the Supreme Court had declared them as "third gender" in 2014.
