The incident occurred around 9 pm when the New Delhi to Bengaluru Rajdhani Express was passing Nawandgi railway station. A fire tender was pressed into service and the flames were put off.
"My ID card was not being issued so I set the coach on fire and tore seat covers of the train," the accused told the police. He was arrested soon after the incident.
The passengers were cooking breakfast when the blast occurred. Two adjoining coaches were engulfed in the raging fire. The fire destroyed three of the train carriages, including two economy class carriages and one business class.
The incident was reported while the Nandigram Express was travelling from Nagpur to Mumbai via Aurangabad.

The train, Sapt Kranti Express, was running from Bihar's Muzaffarpur to Delhi, at the time of the incident.
No one was hurt in the incident. The Trivandrum bound Express train, which arrived here at midnight on Saturday, was scheduled to leave Silchar station at 8.05 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

The two coaches -- B-6 and B-7 -- of the fully air-conditioned train, caught fire around 11.45 am, North Central Railway's Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Gaurav Krishna Bansal said.
The driver, Bidyut Mondal, detected the fire and showing an exemplary presence of mind, stopped the train and immediately started taking safety measures.
