The two coaches -- B-6 and B-7 -- of the fully air-conditioned train, caught fire around 11.45 am, North Central Railway's Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Gaurav Krishna Bansal said.
No passenger in the Ernakulam-Howrah Antodaya Express was injured in the incident, but services on the line were disrupted for a couple of hours, he said.
Due to the accident, rail traffic from Madurai to Karaikudi was affected for a brief while.
The 51675 Chopan Express derailed at around 10:20 pm, about 30 km away from the Katni railway station, Railway Protection Force Inspector Virendra Singh said.
All passengers were safe and the coaches were stopped by alert staff by putting stones and bringing the train to a halt.
The accident had injured seven youngsters, five of them died on the spot, while one succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, later.
According to East Central Railway spokesperson Rajesh Kumar, key man Shivnandan spotted a damaged track around 8 am between Mansi-Maheshkhunt in Katihar district.
Luckily, he wasn’t run over but fell by the side of the track and sustained a head injury.
Thirteen cars jumped the track. The train had 14 cars, including two engines, said Brook Bova of the Washington State Patrol.
Piyush Goyal said that track renewal -- replacing old tracks with new wherever necessary -- was essential for the safety of the railways
On Wednesday night, 10 passengers of the Delhi-Kalka Himalayan Queen express got injured when the train driver suddenly applied emergency brakes in Karnal's Gharaunda.
The accident took place under Bareli Faridpur police station.
The five women were crossing the tracks on their way home after taking bath at a nearby ghat, an official said.
