Tomato price rise: Cooperative NCCF, NAFED have received a mandate from central govt to sell tomatoes as there has been a sharp rise in the retail prices of the key kitchen staple up to Rs 224 per kg in several parts of the country.
The price of the tomato crossed Rs 100 per kg in Bengaluru and Raipur. Tomato prices are ruling high since pre-Monsoon rains in most retail markets of the country and now we have memes over the situation.
The average all India maximum retail price of tomato rose to Rs 143 per kg on Friday from Rs 113 per kg on November 22 while all India modal price was ruling at Rs 60 per kg as against Rs 67.5 per kg in the said period, as per the government data.
Tomato prices in consuming centres of Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad fell below three-year lows, in the range of Rs 4-10 per kg on Friday in the wholesale markets on higher arrival, according to official data.
While the prices of onions almost doubled in comparison to the rates at the same time last year, tomatoes had, so far, stayed more or less unaffected.
