The Indian Railways subsidiary, Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation or IRCTC on Wednesday urged to the people not to cancel their e-tickets on their own if their trains being cancelled by the national transporter due to nation-wide lockdown to help curb the spread of deadly novel coronavirus pandemic.
IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta said on Tuesday that the airline would not be charging any fee for cancelling tickets that are up to April 30, and it would store the ticket price as credit on that PNR, which can be used for alternative booking up to September 30.
Railways issued an advisory on Saturday relaxing refund rules for passengers who had booked tickets to travel between March 21 and April 15 in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country to avoid crowding on trains and encourage social distancing.
Budget carrier GoAir will not charge any fee on cancellation or rescheduling of tickets booked till April 30 amid the coronavirus scare. The offer applies for all bookings made between March 8 and April 30 and for a travel period between March 8 and September 30.
The Indian Railways earned over Rs 9,000 crore from ticket cancellation charges and non-cancellation of wait-listed tickets between 2017 and 2020, the national transporter has said in response to an RTI application.
The ticket was booked in April 2017, before the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and subsequently cancelled. It was booked for a journey on July 2, 2017, a day after the new tax regime came into force.
The government believes cancellation charges are too high, sometimes even more than the price of the ticket itself.
