Starting from tomorrow, December 1st, several new rules will be in place, including those for buying and selling SIM cards. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had initially planned to implement these rules from October 1, but they were postponed by two months.
Starting December 1, new rules for buying SIM cards aim to curb scams, requiring dealer verification, Aadhaar scanning for customer purchases, and limiting bulk issuance.
DoT to soon begin testing 5G networks in India with support from telecom operators and vendors.
The need for time limit came after Reliance Jio accused old operators, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, of "illegally" masquerading wire-line numbers as mobile numbers for "undue enrichment" .
"There is a plan to install 57,559 towers for mobile services in the rural areas during the financial year 2019-20 by telecom service providers," Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
The service providers have been issued show-cause notice to explain their position including reasons for non-compliance.
