The apex court observed that though Eiffel Tower was "perhaps nothing compared to Taj Mahal", Paris was thronged by 80 million of visitors last year whereas only 10 million foreign tourists visited India during that period.
"Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it," the Supreme Court said in a hard hitting remark while noting that the Taj Mahal "is more beautiful than the Eiffel Tower".
A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said that the Taj Mahal was one of the seven wonders of the world and people can offer their prayers at other mosques also.

The apex court also expressed concern over the historic monument being infected by insects and asked the authorities, including ASI, what steps they have taken to prevent this.
The apex court suggested that the Centre take the assistance of experts from India and abroad to first assess the damage and then take steps to restore the historic monument.
"Once you have registered the monument as a Waqf property, your statement that you will not be staking claim will not help," said the bench.

When the waqf board counsel told the court that Shah Jahan had himself declared it a Waqf property, the bench asked the board to show it the original deed executed by the Mughal emperor.
